Floor preparation for your flowing screed
across Yorkshire,Humberside & North Lincolnshire.

In preparation for your flowing screed, the area to be screeded must be tanked out to contain the liquid screed and allow for expansion of the material.

Preparing your floor for a liquid screed

  • When installing the insulation, make sure any gaps around wall edges, doorways and upstands are filled with a suitable material, such as expandable foam or rock wool. This is to avoid the screed from going under the insulation, causing it to float up.
  • Insulation with a minimum strength of 100kPa must be used in floating floors
  • Install a perimeter expansion strip tight to all walls and upstands within the area to be screeded.
  • Overlay the insulation of existing floor with a suitable membrane. This should be laid up the walls approximately 50-100mm above the expected screed level. Secure the membrane so it doesn’t flap over into the screed when it is laid.
  • Overlap any joints by 150mm and tape the full length of the joint to make the area liquid screed tight.
  • Ensure corners are folded in tight and taped.
  • If installing Under Floor Heating (UFH), the membrane must be installed before the UFH pipes are laid.
  • Ensure the area to be screeded is free from contamination as this may float to the surface of the screed when laid.
  • Never use foil backed tape as it causes a reaction with the screed.
  • Tape any holes within the membrane to avoid the screed leaking.
  • Ensure the area to be screeded is water tight, free from drafts, protected from frost and direct sunlight.
